Pastor's Corner March-April

 The Pastor's Corner March - April 2018

Easter Sunday Morning on April Fools? Sounds like a joke, but it isn’t. This year, Easter Sunday will be on April 1st. April Fools' Day (sometimes called All Fools' Day) is an annual celebration in some European and Western countries commemorated on April 1 by playing practical jokes and spreading hoaxes. The jokes and their victims are called April fools. People playing April Fool jokes expose their prank by shouting "April fool". Some newspapers, magazines and other published media report fake stories, which are usually explained the next day or below the news section in small letters.

It’s interesting that as we celebrate Easter, or the resurrection, on this day; we can’t help but think back to a time in the early church when there were those who thought the resurrection of Jesus was a “big joke”. Some felt that maybe the body had been stolen and others thought it was a made up story. They believed this, even though Jesus himself talked about this in John, which says, “'What sign do you show to us, since you do these things?' Jesus answered and said to them, 'Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.' Then the Jews said, 'It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?' But he was speaking of the temple of his body. When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he said this; and they believed the Scripture, and the word which Jesus had spoken”.

No, the resurrection of Jesus Christ was not a “big joke”. It is a foundational belief of the Christian Church. That’s why Paul said this in I Corinthians 15:12-19, “12 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied.”

Yes, we can celebrate on this Easter Sunday. Even on April Fools’ Day. We know without a doubt that Jesus did die. Jesus was buried in a borrowed tomb. Jesus did get up from the grave on the third day morning. Others may think it’s a joke. Others may think it’s a prank. BUT FOR THE CHRISTIAN, IT IS A REASON TO CELEBRATE ON THIS EASTER SUNDAY! #WEBUILDHERE
